Lower Dolpo Trekking

Dolpo is the least developed and most rural region of Nepal. Until 1989 the complete district was barred for trekkers and then the southern side of Dolpo was opened for various expeditions for trekkers. The book of Peter Matheson comprises detail information about Dolpo.

Dolpo is located between Tibetan plateau and Dhauligiri Himalayan range. From 1984 Dolpo has the country’s biggest national park consisting of numerous animals of wild life including Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep and the endangered Snow Leopard. Mainly Tibetan mother tongue people live in Dolpo.  The people of Dolpo are traders and exchange good via barter system and during the summer the locals take their yak onto the Tibetan plateau for grazing.

Nepali movie named The Caravan was based on the life present at Dolpo and it became a huge success as well as it was nominated for the Oscar Award. Before 1989 only few trekkers had explored the area. Dr. Herbert Tychy in 1953 and John Tyson in the beginning of 1960s had explored the area. Dolpo is considered as one of the most elegant trekking area in the rural area of Nepal even though really small numbers of people have been here.

The Lower Dolpo is for trekkers who crave for an off-the-beaten-path experience.  On the journey we pass through the Shey Phoksundo Lake as well as various mountain scenery, Buddhist monasteries and yak caravans. We encounter wooded area and rugged canyons on the way. Through couple of flights we arrive at Jhuphal. From Jhuphal our expedition begins.
